A Man Kept Manspreading Into a Woman’s Plane Seat for Hours – When He Returned From the Restroom, He Shouted, ‘What the Hell Did You Do?!’

“You went behind my back?”

“I didn’t need to discuss my seat with you.”

The attendant returned before he could answer.

“Sir, please lower your voice and sit down.”

“Did she complain about me? She never said anything was wrong.”

“I asked to move.”

“I asked you to move your leg several times,” I said.

“You’re exaggerating.” He turned to the attendant. “You asked her earlier, remember? She told you everything was fine.”

“Ma’am?”

For a moment, I wanted to disappear.

I could call it a misunderstanding. Josh could sit down, and everyone would stop watching.

“Ma’am?”

But I’d already spent almost four hours avoiding this conversation.

“Yes,” I said. “I told you I was fine.”

Josh folded his arms.

“There you go.”

I faced the attendant.

“I said that because I didn’t want an argument. But I wasn’t fine. I’d already asked him to move several times.”

“I told you I was fine.”

Josh shook his head.

“That’s not what happened.”

“It is.”

My voice was quieter than his, but I didn’t look away.

Before he could respond, Henry spoke.

“She did ask you to move.”

“It is.”

We turned toward him.

He held his paperback open.

“I heard her ask more than once.”

Josh frowned.

“Stay out of it.”

Henry looked at him.

“Stay out of it.”

“I was sitting right here.”

I gave Henry a grateful smile.

Then I turned back to the attendant.

“I wasn’t asking for special treatment. I wanted to sit comfortably in the seat I paid for.”

She nodded.

“You’re welcome to stay in your new seat. If you’d like to report the incident afterward, customer service can help you.”

“I was sitting right here.”

Josh made an irritated sound, but the attendant held her ground.

“Sir, I’ve asked you twice to return to your seat. Please don’t make me ask again.”

He glanced at the passengers watching us before sitting down.

I picked up my book, though my hands were still shaking.

At least I’d finally said what happened without apologizing.

Josh made an irritated sound.

***

For the next half hour, I enjoyed having room to move. My hip still ached, but I finished two chapters and ate the pretzels I’d saved.

Then Josh appeared beside my row.

“Look, Celeste, I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable.”

“All right.”

He glanced toward the attendant.

“So we’re good? Because I don’t want this turning into some official complaint.”

“All right.”

I closed my book.

“I haven’t decided whether I’ll report it.”

His expression hardened.

“Look, I travel for work all the time. I don’t need a complaint attached to my name over something like this.”

“Then you should’ve listened when I asked you to move.”

Josh rubbed his forehead.

I closed my book.

“You’re really going to make trouble for me over a cramped airplane seat?”

“You decided my space was yours.”

He looked away, then lowered his voice.

“Just promise me you won’t file anything.”

I met his eyes.

“I won’t promise that.”

He looked away.

“Unbelievable,” he muttered before walking away.

I reopened my book.

He hadn’t once asked whether my hip was better. He’d only wanted me to protect his reputation.

***

After landing, I stood near the gate with my phone in my hand. Marianne and Rose were waiting somewhere, and I wanted nothing more than to get to them.

Then I remembered Josh asking me to protect his reputation.

“Unbelievable.”

I approached the customer-service desk.

“Excuse me. I’d like to report something that happened on my flight.”

The employee listened and showed me how to submit a written complaint.

“I’m not looking for compensation,” I explained. “I just want what happened on record.”

I thanked her and opened the form.

“Excuse me.”

I entered my flight details and described what happened, including how the attendant helped me move.

I read my account once, checked the flight details, and submitted it.

For once, I hadn’t softened the truth to make someone else comfortable.

***

After collecting my suitcase, I called Marianne.

“I’m coming out now.”

“Rose’s awake. She’s been looking around for you.”

I entered my flight details and described what happened.

“Tell her Grandma’s almost there.”

***

Marianne was waiting near arrivals with Rose in her carrier. She hugged me, then stepped back.

“Mom, you look exhausted. What happened?”

“A man decided his ticket included half my seat.”

“What?”

“Tell her Grandma’s almost there.”

“I’ll tell you everything later. I managed to move, and I reported him.”

Marianne shook her head.

“I’m glad you stood up for yourself.”

“So am I. Now, where’s that granddaughter I’ve traveled all this way to meet?”
