I used my inheritance to buy back Grandma’s old house. My husband laughed and refused to help. But three days later, I found him there with a stranger and part of a wall torn open. “You need to see what we found,” he said. I had no idea what he’d done behind my back.
“Tell her,” my husband said. “Go on. Tell her what it’s worth.”
I stood in my grandmother’s storage room. The plywood was ripped off the wall, and a stranger with a folder was smiling at me.
“What on earth is going on here?!” I said.
To explain how I ended up there, I need to go back three days.
“Tell her what it’s worth.”
At breakfast, I told Declan I’d bought my grandmother’s house.
“Well, congratulations, Layla. You’ve officially found the dumbest way to waste money.”
“You haven’t even asked what I paid.”
“I don’t need to. I’ve seen the place. Peeling paint, broken windows, weeds up to the mailbox.”
“I know what it looks like.”
